about

Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, continues to explore the world of modular synth music.

Following the success and critical acclaim of the first four Tone Science compilation albums, DiN label boss Ian Boddy has collated another nine tracks from musicians of varying backgrounds working in the realms of modular synthesis.

One of the things that is so delightful about artists working with modular synthesisers is the sheer variety of styles on show. These instruments more than any other can be personalised for each musician who can then express themselves within their own sonic world.

The journey on this fifth volume gets under way with the gentle, layered tapestry of “Incantation” by Hélène Vogelsinger followed by the beautiful, glitched piano treatments of “Iterations” from Raffael Seyfried. These two opening tracks compliment each other with their melodic soothing tones before entering deep space territory with the cosmic soundscape of the track “Waving And Drowning” from Stephan Whitlan.

The next two pieces very much put the modular synth in the foreground with their sound and technique. “Cuckoo” by Johnny Woods is a hypnotic, cyclical track featuring his Wiard 300 series modular system. This is followed by “Clocks, Unravelling” by Polypores which shows an astonishing command of the modular environment with its ever evolving rhythmic acrobatics.

Lisa Bella Donna then takes us back into deep space with the beautifully authentic vintage synth soundscape “Electronic Study #26” featuring her venerable ARP 2600. The next two tracks re-establish the rhythmic side of modular with firstly Matths playfully combining the techno and ambient genres in the wonderful “Delusion”. This is followed by Chuck van Zyl who goes all out with his Berlin School piece “The Zanti Misfits”. The album then comes to a rest and closes out with the static dronescape of “Delicate Elementum” by Philippe Petit with the pure sound of Buchla synthesisers.

“Tone Science Module No.5 Integers and Quotients” continues the journey down the rabbit hole of possibilities and sound worlds inhabited by artists and musicians working in this ever fascinating and varied musical field.

1. Hélène Vogelsinger Incantation 6:28
Enhance your perceptions and the invisible will whisper to you. Ignite your soul and walk in the light of its beauty. Free yourself from that physical reality.

2. Raffael Seyfried Iterations 6:07
An exploration of overlapping a piano tape loop playing at multiple speeds interspersed with different sequenced and played voices on the modular cumulating into a more melodic second part.

3. Stephan Whitlan Waving And Drowning 6:47
C. R. Mackintosh wrote; there is hope in honest error, none in the icy perfections of the mere stylist. Modular offers equally chance and choice. Modules: 4ms, Erica, MTM & Doepfer.

4. Johnny Woods Cuckoo 6:41
Cuckoo is a celebration of simple repeating sequences - looped and layered to create a forest full of simple melodies.

5. Polypores Clocks, Unravelling 6:45
A live composition using varying degrees of random CV modulation to turn a simple static sequence into something which is living, breathing, and constantly shifting in time and timbre.

6. Lisa Bella Donna Electronic Study #26 8:52
A return to my days of only using a pair of ARP 2600s & 8 channel tape. It’s intended as “tape music”.  Simply carving something out of nothing. Exploring & making a home in the deep wilderness of the electronic forests.

7. Matths Delusion 6:30
Situated somewhere between ambient and techno, this performance provides uneasy tension colliding with deep bass lines and playful drums.

8. Chuck van Zyl The Zanti Misfits 7:03
The foundation of my live track is based on the extensive capabilities of electronic instruments without a fixed voice architecture, and constructed in the sequencer aesthetic of Spacemusics Berlin-School.

9. Philippe Petit Delicate Elementum 6:41
Easel K vs. Buchla 200 systems delicately taking pleasure in varying timbres, heights, harmonics and frequencies diffracted through resonances in the hope of creating some otherworldly feedbacks.

The DiN ambient label was set up by Ian Boddy in 1999 to release ambient electronica that bridged the gap between the analogue sound of the early 70's synth pioneers and the digital soundscapes of the more experimental modern exponents of electronic music. ... more
